چکیده
The patient was referred to us for suspected Bechet's disease and was finally diagnosed with osteitis and skin lesions caused by secondary syphilis. The syphilitic osteitis was confirmed by PCR using a biopsy of the spinal lesion.

Osteitis in the dens of axis caused by Treponema pallidum
BACKGROUND Syphilis has been referred to as "the great imitator" due to its ability to imitate other diseases. Untreated syphilis becomes a systemic infection that can involve almost every organ systems. Treponema pallidum has a high affinity for bone tissue, but osteitis has mainly been described in late stages of the disease. Vertebral involvement is rare, and this is to our knowledge the fir...
متن کاملSecondary syphilis presenting as SAPHO syndrome features.
The SAPHO syndrome may evolve following low virulent infections. This report describes a patient who developed a clinical syndrome that complied with the formal diagnostic criteria of the SAPHO following an infection with syphilis. His clinical manifestations gradually resolved following antibiotic therapy. This interesting association underlines the pathogenic circumstances linking infections ...
متن کاملSyphilis: an update.
Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum (TP), a fragile spiral motile organism. At the infectious stage it rarely causes life-threatening or serious illness. Natural history studies undertaken in Oslo (1890–1910) and Tuskegee in the US (1932) suggest that up to 35% of patients with early syphilis will develop serious neurological, cardiovascular or gummatous disease if untreated. Organisms alm...
متن کاملTreponema pallidum Lipoprotein TP0435 Expressed in Borrelia burgdorferi Produces Multiple Surface/Periplasmic Isoforms and mediates Adherence
The ability of Treponema pallidum, the syphilis spirochete to colonize various tissues requires the presence of surface-exposed adhesins that have been difficult to identify due to the inability to culture and genetically manipulate T. pallidum. Using a Borrelia burgdorferi-based heterologous system and gain-in-function approach, we show for the first time that a highly immunogenic lipoprotein ...
متن کاملCultivation of Treponema pallidum in subcutaneous chambers implanted in golden hamsters.
Treponema pallidum was successfully grown in subcutaneous chambers in golden hamsters. Abnormally long forms of T. pallidum were found in these chambers. The cause of this abnormality may possibly be due to their being coated with antibody which could inhibit cell division or render the organism avirulent or both. T. pallidum was successfully passaged between hamsters but with a possible diminu...
